This series began with finding an old photograph album in a second-hand store. That such a thing could happen - a photograph album be separated from a family - disturbed me greatly, particularly as I am currently immersed in the study of treasured images from my immediate ancestors and attempting to unravel actual genealogical relationships.
Certain images
of young girls in this album, so innocent and present in their frank stares toward some anonymous camera lens, were compelling to me. Since they did not, in fact, depict relatives of mine, I felt a freedom to work with the images in ways I would likely tend not to do with those of people I actually knew. In some cases the images were so faded that the figures had almost completely disappeared. I became quite attached to each child, feeling that through the vehicle of artmaking I was somehow rescuing her and preserving each in time.
